The first ever Member For A Day golf tournament was held Saturday, January 5th. Twenty 2-person teams competed for the prize fund of $1,440. The field consisted of 25 guests and 15 members. The team of Keith Cooper (Suffolk Va) and Kenny Boyette (Williamsburg Va.) won the first flight gross division with a bogey free 68. The pair was very solid with birdies on 6 and 16 and a tap in Eagle from 2 inches on 10. Cooper is the number one player at Virginia Wesleyan University and Boyette is the assistant golf coach at Virginia Wesleyan. The winning score was very impressive considering neither player had ever played Beechwood Country Club before Saturdays round. After the round, Cooper and Boyette praised the golf course saying "the golf course is so fun to play, the greens are very tricky but also very fair" and both players stated how they are looking forward to coming back and seeing the golf course this summer.
JT Belcher, golf professional at Sleepy Hole Golf course, teamed up with his father Sanford (Franklin) to shoot a 2 under par 70 to tie Mark Hannah and Jimmy Lewis (both from Va. Beach) for second place gross in the first flight. Jimmy Boswell (Portsmouth) and Billy Gilpin (Suffolk) won the first flight net division with a fine 63 followed by Dave Umberger (Suffolk) and Glen Loehr (Portsmouth) with a score of 65.
The second flight gross division was won by BW members Dennis Mullen and Josh Osmon with a score of 75. Scott Gray and BB Wynn finished second with a score of 77 and Va Beach residents Ned Atkins and his partner "3 Day" finished third firing a score of 80. The net division in the second flight was won by Andy Zawiskie (Moyock) and Ernie Padden (Va. Beach) with a score of 75 followed by the score of 78 recorded from the teams of Red Dickens and Ricky Prince and Bob McDonald and Buck Higginbotham (Portsmouth).
